Social Upliftment
Telfree pursues with great pride its role as an alternative telecommunications provider, and thus aims to reduce the cost of communication and empower the less advantaged in emerging markets. To this end, Telfree has launched two major projects, MzansiSMS and EduMandla.
-
Telfree MzansiSMS
MzansiSMS is targeted at South Africans, to whom it aims to bring the lowest-cost SMS rates in the country. Thanks to MzansiSMS, the lesser fortunate are finally able to enjoy cheaper cell phone services – a move that has transformed the mobile landscape in South Africa, where often, the poorest have been paying the highest rates for mobile services.
The MzansiSMS service is delivered via a small, easily downloadable application for mobile phones in South Africa, accessible on most mobile devices with colour screens. MzansiSMS can reduce the cost per SMS to less than one cent, truly democratising the use of the mobile phone.
Telfree & Cell-Life Partnership
Telfree has established a partnership with Cell-Life, a pioneering initiative that provides effective technology-based solutions for the management of HIV/AIDS and other health issues. Cell-Life's primary function is to address health related logistical challenges in developing countries, such as the provision and distribution of anti-retroviral treatments, continuous patient monitoring and evaluation, and collection and communication of relevant data.
Cell-Life's mission is to become the backbone of managing HIV and TB in Africa, by providing affordable solutions that offer support for communication, information and logistics. Telfree is a donor of Cell-Life and provides more affordable telecommunications services for their various projects.

Telfree & SMSWeb assist 50 disadvantaged schools
Telfree is collaborating with SMSWeb, a company enabling primary and secondary schools to communicate important and urgent messages to the parents of the children attending the schools. The SMSWeb platform substantially improves communication with the parents, bridging a critical communication divide. The service provides several benefits, chief among them cost savings from reduced telephone and printing costs for the school, time saved by school personnel, improved parental involvement with school events and meetings, improved discipline at school as parents are now pro-actively informed of problem situations and improved learner safety as urgent messages can be sent within seconds to all parents.
In this initiative Telfree has donated its SMS services to 50 previous disadvantaged schools not having the opportunity to assess the benefits of an SMS service due to affordability constraints. Over a period of six months, the initiative demonstrates that by using the SMS service, a school can make enough significant savings to cover the cost of the service, and have further far-reaching benefits.
